Our story

A Journey of Faith

1987

Diocese Established

The Anglican Church of Kenya Diocese of Nambale was established in 1987 from the Diocese of Maseno North. It was created to bring episcopal services closer to the congregation. The first Bishop was the Rt. Rev. Isaac Namango, who had been the assistant Bishop in the Diocese of Maseno North, serving under Bishop James Mundia.

1991–1996

Dioceses Carved Out

In 1991, the Diocese of Katakwa was carved out and in 1996 the Diocese of Bungoma was also carved out leaving the present Diocese of Nambale. The Headquarters of the Diocese are at A.C.K St. Thomas Cathedral Nambale and are associated with the memory of the late much-loved pioneering Rev. Canon Jeremiah Awori. The Diocese covers a big part of Busia County and parts of Bumula Sub-County in Bungoma County.

The Maseno North Legacy & 1987 Inception

The Diocese of Nambale was created in 1987, carved out of the expansive Diocese of Maseno North to bring pastoral care and episcopal supervision closer to the congregations of Western Kenya. The first Bishop was the late Rt. Rev. Isaac Namango, who had faithfully served as assistant Bishop under Bishop James Mundia.

From its early inception, Nambale served as a spiritual beacon, subsequently parenting the Diocese of Katakwa (1991) and the Diocese of Bungoma (1996) before settling into its current territorial boundaries.

Canon Jeremiah Awori Memorial & St. Thomas Cathedral

The diocesan headquarters at St. Thomas Cathedral in Nambale Town are deeply tied to the memory of the pioneering pioneer missionary, the late Rev. Canon Jeremiah Musungu Awori, who introduced the Anglican faith into the region in the early 20th century.

Today, St. Thomas Cathedral stands as an architectural and spiritual landmark, hosting synods, episcopal ordinations, and weekly diocesan broadcasts.
